Established in 1944, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is an independent, non-tax-based educational and cultural resource center with an international reputation for excellence in science exhibitry and informal science education. OMSI is dedicated to improving the public’s understanding of science and technology through a wide variety of innovative and interactive science programming. Approximately 1,100,000 people visit the Museum and participate in OMSI’s programs every year.

Since 1992, OMSI has occupied a 18.5-acre riverside campus on the east bank of the Willamette River in downtown Portland. The complex includes five exhibit halls; eight interactive science labs; a planetarium; a 300-seat, five-story, domed OMNIMAX Theater; and the 219-foot U.S.S. Blueback submarine moored just outside the building in the river. The Museum also has a river view café, a science store stocked with hundreds of educational fun toys and an extensive bookstore.

In addition to the exhibits on permanent display, OMSI designs and builds science exhibits for travel to other science centers nationwide. Currently, OMSI has more than 25 exhibits in circulation—more than any other science museum in the country.

OMSI also boasts one of the most extensive science education programs in the world and serves 180,000 annually. OMSI brings a unique brand of traveling science education to more than 156,000 students in seven western states. OMSI teacher education programs provide programming to more than 1,900 teachers each year, and OMSI camps serve more than 10,000 children and provide approximately 328,000 hours of science instruction annually. OMSI’s education programs include science classes and camp-ins.

OMSI is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Labor Day through mid-June and is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from mid-June through Labor Day. Open all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
