Numerous people who followed the Oregon Trail to the Willamette Valley in the 1850s are buried here. Many of them later moved to Fossil to claim land under the Homestead Act, which began in the 1860s. Early pioneers buried here include Thomas Benton and Mary Jane (Chambers) Hoover, grandparents of famed University of Oregon track coach and Nike co-founder, Bill Bowerman.
