About the cemetery
Willamette National Cemetery
ca. 163,453 burials
Congress authorized the creation of a national cemetery in the Portland area in 1941, but did not appropriate funds to build it because of World War II defense needs. Construction finally began in 1950, with the first burial in 1951. Now, over 300 acres of rolling lawns and woodlands comprise the cemetery, straddling the Multnomah and Clackamas County lines.
