The Poet in the Desert
About this book
This long poem set is a platform for Wood to contrast the truth of the natural world to the manifest problems of society such as an unfair economic system and widespread poverty. The backdrop for his thoughts is the remote desert of Harney County in southeast Oregon. Wood visited the area often and stayed at a ranch along the Blitzen River. He wrote two subsequent versions of the poem in 1918 and 1929.
