1This position, originally called Labor Commissioner, was changed to Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Inspector of Factories and Workshops in 1918. In 1930, the name changed to Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor. The 1979 Legislature changed the name to Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries.
2The 1995 Legislature made this position nonpartisan, and the 1998 election was the first for this
position after the change.
3Due to the appointment and election of Brad Avakian in 2008, the 2009 Legislature’s House Bill 2095 provided that the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries position be placed on the 2012
ballot for a two-year term. This restored the position to its regular election schedule in 2014.
