The State Department of Energy’s mission is “Leading Oregon to a safe, clean, and sustainable energy future.” The department works with many stakeholders to help implement the state’s energy goals and policies. The work is diverse—from helping Oregonians improve the energy efficiency of their homes, businesses and schools, to overseeing the state’s interests in the cleanup project at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington. The department provides policy expertise to prepare for Oregon’s future energy needs and offers technical and financial resources to encourage adoption of and investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy resources.
The department also staffs the Energy Facility Siting Council, which has jurisdiction over large energy generating and transmission facilities within the state. This effort brings together project developers, local and regional governments, citizens and others to make sure proposed projects are approved, built, operated and decommissioned consistent with all applicable laws and regulations. The department was created in 1975 and has about 90 employees.
