The State Board of Pharmacy was created in 1891. Its purpose is to enforce high quality standards of pharmacy practice and regulate drugs to uphold the safety, health and welfare of the public. Today, the board is appointed by the governor and consists of nine members: five licensed pharmacists, two public members and two pharmacy technicians. There are also 20 staff members, led by the executive director, who are located at the Portland headquarters. They implement the board’s policies, statutes and rules through licensure and compliance.
Currently, there are 27,182 licensees, which include pharmacists, preceptors, pharmacy technicians, interns, and drug outlets, including pharmacies, manufacturers, wholesalers and charitable pharmacies. Licensing fees solely finance the activities of the board. In the last year, Oregon became the first state to implement contraceptive prescribing authority for pharmacists.
