Present Duties
The Board of
Pharmacy was created in 1891, and regulates
pharmacy practice to ensure that only qualified
individuals practice pharmacy in Oregon. The board licenses pharmacists by examination or through reciprocity with other states, and it registers and inspects hospital and retail pharmacies, drug wholesalers and manufacturers and over-the-counter drug outlets. It investigates drug diversion and violations of its rules and regulates the
quality and distribution of controlled substances, prescription and over-the-counter drugs within
the state. The board enforces compliance by administrative procedures and by court action. Board activities are financed by license fees.
