Veterinary Medical Examining Board > Web site
In 1903, the Legislature enacted the Veterinary Practice Act, which authorizes the Veterinary Medical Examining Board to regulate the practice of veterinary medicine in Oregon. The board licenses veterinarians, Certified Veterinary Technicians and Euthanasia Technicians, ensuring that every applicant meets state and national requirements for education, testing and experience. The board protects the public and the public’s animals by making and enforcing rules for competency, health and safety standards for veterinarians and facilities. With a staff of three located in Portland, the board processes license applications and renewals, proposes and adopts or repeals rules and investigates complaints alleging violations of the Veterinary Practice Act.
The board is comprised of eight volunteer members: five veterinarians, two members of the public and one Certified Veterinary Technician. The board was the first in the country to elect a Certified Veterinary Technician to serve as chair. In 2016, the board began registering veterinary facilities in Oregon and, in 2017, will begin inspections to ensure practices meet all minimum standards.
