Present Duties

The Office of Attorney General was created by the Legislature in 1891. The Department of Justice was later established by the Legislature in 1947 and is the equivalent of the state’s law firm. With nine divisions and approximately 1,300 employees, the agency is headquartered in Salem and has nine legal and 12 child support offices throughout the state. The department, which is led by the attorney general, is dedicated to the ethical and independent legal representation of state government, including all elected and appointed officials, agencies, boards and commissions. The department also advocates for and protects all Oregonians, especially the most vulnerable, such as children and seniors. In all, the department and the attorney general have responsibility and authority under more than 350 state statutes.

The mission of the department is to serve state government and support safe and healthy communities throughout Oregon by providing essential justice services. The attorney general and the nine divisions are dedicated to providing ethical, independent and high quality legal services to state government; safeguarding consumers from fraud and unfair business practices; fighting crime and helping crime victims; advocating for vulnerable children; supporting families through the collection of child support; enforcing environmental protections; defending the civil rights of all Oregonians; and pursuing justice and upholding the rule of law.
